In October 2023 I travelled to Birmingham to present a panel of photographs to the British Institute of Professional Photography, where I was awarded my Associateship accreditation (ABIPP).
The panel I submitted was titled ‘Tales of a Country Life’ and included photographs taken over the past few years across the UK.
I find the countryside to be a never-ending source of inspiration and aspiration. The people, their lifestyle, the animals and scenery. Life on the farm changes everyday. Despite the routines, days are unpredictable and a farmer’s love for the job and their animals quickly draws you in. I wanted to share the hard work and joy that come with farming and country life through the images to the judges.
This panel was also heavily influenced by a suitcase I found, left by my late Grandma, full of photographs dating back to 1920. They showed my ancestors tending to pigs and geese on their smallholding. I spent hours looking at these photographs. They were snapshots, documenting life at that time, telling stories. Every image filled me with joy. To be able to offer this for my clients; photographs that will be passed down through the generations, so that their great great grandchildren can see the life their relatives once lived. It feels special.
After presenting my panel to the judges, I received feedback on each photograph. Four of the photographs were likened to the story telling of Beatrix Potter – work that I have adored and admired for years. The illustrations, warmth and storytelling. I had to try really hard not to do a happy dance when they said it. Although I think the huge grin on my face probably gave it away.
It was a really special day. My Dad kindly drove and kept me company. It was so lovely to share getting the accreditation with him; after all, he is the reason I picked up a camera in the first place.
