Achieving My Licentiateship

Behind The Scenes

In September 2020, I was awarded a Licentiateship with The British Institute of Professional Photography.

To achieve the award, I had to submit a panel of images alongside supporting evidence.

The vision for my panel was to create a body of work that displayed a broad overview of my private Equine & Canine Commissions. From capturing the close bond between owner and animal, formal portraiture and then family group photographs also. I strongly believe that horses and dogs have a huge impact on the life of their owners; creating an abundance of joy, happiness, affection, home & belonging, tranquility and a fresh lease of life, all wrapped into one. I wished for my panel to reflect this.

I decided to work towards this Qualification, after I first discovered BIPP at the NEC Photography Show in March 2019. To have the opportunity to continually develop my knowledge, experience, and eye as a photographer appealed to me, and throughout this process I enjoyed challenging myself to critique my work objectively.

This panel includes a variety of animals, from a miniature dachshund, to a gorgeous Appaloosa horse. I focused on capturing the cheeky characters like that of the Cockerpoo, whilst also focusing on the moments of calm and love; where time appears to stand still as the owner bonds with their four-legged best friend.

My goal for each commission is to tell a part of the client’s story in each and every photograph.

To present photographs to the client that they can truly relate to and say ‘that is us’, is truly magical.

I loved the experience that working towards this Licentiate gave me. The opportunity to be able to take a step back from my photographs and critique them objectively has been a vital part of my growth as a photographer.

Without further ado, here is my final panel…
